Mamma Mia Pizzeria

Summertown, Oxford

PROJECT TYPE: Commercial

ARCHITECTURE: Laura Donald

INTERIOR DESIGN: Rogue Designs

OVERVIEW: The repurposing and extension of a retail property in North Oxford, creating a brand new premises for a much-loved local restaurant.

Following a complete strip out, the premises was renovated and extended to facilitate the needs of a busy commercial restaurant. The total floorspace was more than doubled through the addition of a deep, single-storey flat-roofed extension. The works plan was designed for minimum disruption, including an air-driven piling system, with reduced vibration to lessen noise for neighbouring properties. The fit-out included an industrial kitchen, complete with state-of-the-art equipment. Storage and staff facilities were created, as well as an accessible, spacious, and strikingly designed front of house area, with bar and outside terrace. The apartment above the restaurant also received a full strip out and refurbishment.

The scope of works demanded a full mechanical and electrical refit, complete re-plumbing, and the addition of deep sound insulation throughout. Structural features include a new bespoke timber frontage bearing the comfortingly well-established Mamma Mia signage and a large central roof light bringing natural light into the restaurant. Internal walls exhibit red-brick slips, timber cladding and dark green glazed metro tiles. Carefully considered wall and ceiling lighting makes the space warm and inviting for daytime and evening diners alike.
